Decoded: @appletv BAD MONKEY.
I try to keep this series as positive as possible but the season finale of this show left much to be desired.
It created a perfect parallel to the season 4 finale of Slow Horses.
This show is comedic cop drama at it's finest.
I was curious about how the threads would come together in the end and the show created a wonderful, fresh take on the genre.
Vince Vaughn leads a cast of sensational performances with @robdelaney stepping out of his wheelhouse to create a character that was surprising and eccentric. I am so used to the roles he embodies that this was so fresh and exciting to watch him take dialogue that could have been dry and uninspired and crafts a deeply dark and slightly disturbing version of the man he is often typecast into.
Reality and fantasy are brought into question and the mystical delves into the realm of everyday life.
I believe the writing is well done without a need to be pretentious and the show never takes itself too seriously which lets me drop in and enjoy it even with just a little bit of investment.
The first six episodes had me drawn in and fully invested in the characters and the story they were telling.
You couldn't trust anyone and that made room for each of them to be free of any kind of ideal to fit into.
The deeply flawed aspect to every part of this show bled into some parts of it that left it a little bit diluted towards the end, for my own taste.
I look forward to season 2 taking itself a bit more seriously while continuing on with a setting and core cast that elevate the writing that is simple yet compelling.
Yours faithfully,
Sam Qavah John.
