This documentary tells a tremendous tale of one of God’s strongest warriors: Joe Anoa’i (Roman Reigns). Brilliantly directed by one of professional wrestling’s greatest minds: Paul Heyman. Every beat in this film is deliberate. There is no denying the sheer artistic mastery of this work, but to deny the clear sense of “against all odds” that was levied against a man who seemingly had the path laid out for him has to be the crowning takeaway for this story.
The Tribal Chief has led with an iron fist and has elevated his company, the overall industry, and his family in a way that has never been done before. Some could say it was impossible to imagine a reality like the one Roman has crafted. Every ounce of heartache, sorrow, joy, triumph, and discoveries he made along his journey to becoming the Head of the Table is what makes this tale stand out.
“Adversity is simply part of what makes my story legendary” a by-line for the ages and a North Star I hope to incorporate into my own journey. There is a sense of deep-longing and unexplored fragility that is revealed halfway through the film that had me in tears and wondering how this man continued. How he faced what seemed like impossible mountains, and not just climbed them but took his family with him. He has changed the world in his own unique way. And he has definitely changed my life. He has reminded me of the man I can be and that the challenges I’ve faced and the evening I’ve spent crying out to God simply serve as the soundtrack to one of the greatest origin stories of all time.
The lines began to blur between his story and mine, and that’s what documentaries are all about. Drawing your viewers in and taking them along on a journey. And in this case, a journey of longing, impassioned desire, undisputed work ethic, and hopeful expectation balanced by his repeated recognition of the One he and I both serve.
