Hey, y’all!
Got a new series coming your way.
As most of my friends will attest to, I find joy very easily and love seeing the good in things, and with that in mind, I’m launching this series where I will be talking about a piece of art that I love and have enjoyed recently. I’ll leave the critical analysis to those who can do it. I’m just here to tell you how much I loved it and what I loved the most!
I’m more than happy to kick this off with the new album Human Overboard by James and the Shame (Rhett McLaughlin)
I’m going to start this off with yes, I’m probably very biased, but in complete honesty, this album has been one of my favorite listening experiences recently.
Each track has such a sense of vulnerability and honesty that I had not come to expect from the co-host of GMM. However, each song spoke to the different aspects of his life that were changed forever by his spiritual deconstruction.
As a believer, I can also say without a shadow of a doubt that this album never pressured me to believe different things but rather to empathize, listen, believe, and relate to the tracks from start to finish and that is what happened.
The tracks Sorry, Where We’re Going, and to the Creak and Back serve as powerful, honest love songs to members of his family and reminded me of the sphere of influence my choices had. It resonated with all the familial strings in my heart, and the first time I heard Creak and Back, I was crying on the train to work.
To Kill a Man was a tremendous standout shocker that rocked me to my core and wove in some stunning vocal range.
I have to say that Fruit and In Vain was a powerful jab-strike at the corrupt practices and hypocrisy that plague mainstream Christianity and helped me process through some of my issues with the church.
“The only thing I’m certain of is that I ain’t certain bout much. It’s easy to be right. It’s not so easy to show love.”
This album is the epitome of humility and the pursuit of love and truth.
Please, do yourself a favor and give it a listen.
Regardless of who you are and what you believe, I think there will be something for you to relate to and feel comforted and challenged by.
