Art Thoughts: A Thousand and One
This film reinvigorated my passion for life and family.
Family will never be restricted by the one you’re born into.
This film was a healthy reminder of the power of people of color.
Getting a look inside this beautiful yet complex dynamic of this black family helped me grow in my knowledge of the culture and also the realization of how similar we all are at the end of the day.
Teyana Taylor’s work as Inez absolutely blew me away.
Her presence, brilliance, and intelligence as a performer are never in question and each beat is characterized by a healthy understanding of the role she is playing.
I have never been so in awe of the honest and layered portrayal of the men in this film.
People are complex and dynamic and are never one thing or the other and this story does a marvelous job of cross-stitching deep characterization, empathetic and consistent storytelling prowess, and stunning world-building.
New York City and the broken foster system in America were portrayed with a sense of honesty, and healthy criticism.
Most systems in this country are broken towards people of color especially black people and talking about it in our art and work is one of the most effective ways to bring about lasting, impactful change.
I was blown away by this film and the pain, joy, and hope it served as a vessel too.
